History of Crump
Crump's history reflects a company of many names, all incorporating the name of Mr. E. H. Crump of Memphis, Tennessee, who founded the original company as a retail insurance agency in 1920. The original name was Crump and Trezevant, which became the largest agency in the South. By 1925, branch offices had been opened in St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Little Rock. In 1936, Mr. Crump bought out his partner and formed E. H. Crump Company.
Crump Underwriters was formed in 1954 by Sidney A. Stewart, and became the wholesale insurance arm, to place business with Lloyds of London. At that time there were no domestic insurance companies writing excess and surplus lines coverages and there were no other surplus lines agencies in the South. In 1958 the name was changed to Crump London Underwriters.
In 1986, Crump was sold to Sedgwick Ltd. of London, England. The retail offices of Crump were merged into the Sedgwick retail offices and the excess and surplus lines offices were spun off into a separate company. In 1987, the name Crump E&S was adopted as Crump positioned itself as a national wholesaler. In 1998, the entire Sedgwick organization was sold to the Marsh & McLennan Companies. In November 2005 Crump was sold to J.C. Flowers Co. LLC, a private equity firm based in New York
Today Crump stands as one of the largest independent national wholesale insurance groups in the United States and is looked on by many to be the premier excess and surplus lines brokerage firm in the business. Crump offices offer their retail clients the very best individual account brokers, MGA contract underwriters and program managers. Crump provides access to all of the major excess and surplus lines companies in the business.
