About Crump

History of Crump

Mr. E.H. CrumpCrump's name reflects its legacy beginning with Mr. E. H. Crump of Memphis, Tennessee, who founded the original company as a retail insurance agency in 1920. The original name was Crump and Trezevant, which became the largest agency in the South. By 1925, branch offices operated in St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Little Rock. In 1936, Mr. Crump bought out his partner and formed E. H. Crump Company.

Crump Underwriters began in 1954 when Sidney A. Stewart started the wholesale insurance arm in order to place business with Lloyds of London. At that time, there were no domestic insurance companies writing excess and surplus lines coverage and there were no other surplus lines agencies in the South. In 1958, the name changed to Crump London Underwriters.

In 1986, Crump sold to Sedgwick Ltd. of London, England. The retail offices of Crump merged into the Sedgwick retail offices and the excess and surplus lines offices were spun off into a separate company. In 1987, the name Crump E&S was adopted as Crump positioned itself as a national wholesaler. In 1998, the entire Sedgwick organization was sold to the Marsh & McLennan Companies. In November 2005 Crump was sold to J.C. Flowers Co. LLC, a private equity firm based in New York.

We passed another milestone in 2007 when J.C. Flowers purchased the insurance and retirement operations of BISYS Group and combined the Crump and BISYS operations to form an expanded Crump Group. Crump is now the nation’s largest insurance wholesaler and a leading provider of P&C, Life Insurance and Retirement Services (Ascensus).

Today Crump Insurance Services stands is a leading provider of property and casualty products with both standard and surplus lines carriers. Crump offices offer their retail clients the very best individual account brokers, MGA contract underwriters and program managers. Crump provides access to all of the major excess and surplus lines companies in the business.
